Before the hat, Sinbad was always the center of attention. After the hat, not so much. At least his old tail feather was a prominent feature, and Danielle said it was her favorite part. He didn't even mind if she only said it to make him feel better. I mean, anyone could see it was the best part of the hat!

Ann D'Angelo painted this piece on a 6x12 license plate.  The plate ends in the numbers 1873, so Ann used that date to determine what Hansel and Gretel should be wearing.  Ready to hang, this piece reminds you can survive almost anything, even a cannibal with a sweet tooth.

After spending the month reading fairy tales and folk tales, Ann was delighted to discover more than a few stories in which women characters have agency, but exasperated that women (and girls!) are forever getting hit with the marriage plot, as though that were the solution to all problems and the goal of all women.  The story of Snow White and Rose Red could stand on its own, for example, but no, here comes marriage!  To a bear.  Who is of course magically a prince.  Amazing.

This is an artistic meditation on the gradual silencing of Cinderella over time.

When I selected my fairy tale theme for this project, I ordered lots of books from the library, including Grimms' Bad Girls & Bold Boys: The Moral & Social Vision of the Tales, by Ruth Bottigheimer.  I pounced on that one as soon as it arrived, and in the chapter on Cinderella, I learned something both fascinating and sad.  There were three editions of the Grimms' fairy tales, the first put out in 1812, the second in 1819, and the third in 1857.  Over that time period, Cinderella's lines of 'direct speech' were repeatedly reduced.  As Bottigheimer says, 'Cinderella explains, conjectures, conjures, questions, assumes, and lies in her fourteen speaking appearances in the 1812 edition. . . . The 1857 version presents a far different picture' of a Cinderella without much of a voice.  This, of course, is the Cinderella most of us know.

This was inspired by a character called Truitonne in a fairy tale that resembles Cinderella.  Truitonne is the wicked step sister, so called because she has spots on her face like a trout.  Truitonne's mother spares no expense in outfitting Truitonne for the ball, so here is Truitonne's fantasical conveyance.  Obviously, no simple carriage will do.

The only surviving portrait of the renowned Cat Countess of Wales, who may or may not have lived to be an ancient seventy-four. She was mostly known for her success in rehabilitating wayward kittens and once, a pair of mischievous Sealyham Terriers.
